What are the different game genres.?

Games these day are turning into a medium where artists and companies showcases their technical and artistic smartness. Such a fast and drastic advancement in the field of game development in the recent years has led to the evolution, fusion and creation of numerous game genres. Talking about game genres, we can say it is hard to define a game within the bounds of a particular genre as these days, most games contain the elements of multiple genres in them. For example, if we consider the game Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. We could say it has elements of both first-person shooter and simulation game genres.

Genres can be categorized into twelve main types.

Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) is a game genre made possible using local area or wide area networking technology. In these types of games, the players are able to interact and play against players across the world in a virtual game room.

Simulation is a genre where players are given opportunity to interact, learn and test a real-world situation. For example, let's say like driving a navy vessel or flying a Phantom fighter aircraft. The mechanics and functionalities of the game is written in such a way as to mimic real world physics and environmental response. This genre of games is some time used to provide training and familiarity about certain situation to the professionals.

"Adventure games run the gamut of complexity, from the text-based Zork to the full 3D Tomb Raider. This genre usually consists of the main character interacting with various NPCs (Non-Player Characters) to achieve a goal, whether that goal is rescuing a lost artifact or hooking up with a sexy babe (as in Leisure Suit Larry, by Sierra). These games tend to be highly immersive and can suck away many days of life from a dedicated adventurer." (Baker, Steve, et al, 2001, p. 4)

Real-Time Strategy is a genre where players are given opportunity to collect necessary resources, structure bases and form armies in real-time rather than turn base. The chances of victory in these types of game is solely dependent on the ability of the player to preplan and formulate an effective strategy against the opponent.

Puzzle is a genre for those who love to solve challenges and difficult tasks. The levels and stages of a puzzle game will only have simple figures and colored objects. Puzzle games are quite easy to make and therefore there are more puzzle games than any other genre of game. (Baker, Steve, et al, 2001, p. 4).

Action is a fast-paced genre suitable for those with quick reflexes and a mind to take dynamic challenges. These games just as the name says is full of action and mostly violence and aggression. Most missions are all about fighting and defeating enemies. In most games you will be playing as a certain character with specific abilities, skills or weapons.

Stealth Shooter is a genre suitable for those with extreme patience and intuition. Themes of these games are mostly based on military or spy stories were the main point is to eliminate all the assigned targets without being noticed.

Combat is a genre of video game were players fight one on one. The combat will be taking place at an arena based on different theme. In most of these games the players are given the opportunity to select one character out of many different characters with different ability and attack combo.

First Person Shooter (FPS) is genre where you are given the opportunity to experience and fight in a virtual world through your eyes. The only problem with these kinds of games are that you won't be able to see the way you interact or look like.

Sport is a genre of video game were players are given the opportunity to partake in a virtual sporting event. The characters of many sport games are mostly designed to mimic the appearance and performance of real world characters.

Do you know, car and bike race games are categorized under sports.

"Role-Play Games often involve going on a quest of some description but tend to be a lot more open ended. Players can spend years building up a character, giving it a personality, and collecting a large stash of cash. Some of the earlier RPGs (Role-Play Games), such as Ultima, used very simple graphics but proved highly successful, and some are still played today. Multiplayer RPGs have traditionally been text-based MUDs (Multi-User Dungeons), but some of the more recent games have been graphical, such as Ultima: Online and Ever Quest." (Baker, Steve, et al, 2001, p. 4)

Educational is a genre of video game were the sole purpose of the game is to make learning a fun experience mostly for kids. Most of the educational games are made for tutoring curricular subjects such as math and science.

Reflection

During my research for writing a blog on this topic. I came across many new theories and concepts about classification of genres. On learning I was able to acquire many useful information and a clearer understanding about genres which is actually very helpful for my research on the essay topic and presentation. The funniest thing to say is that it took a research before I can properly define the game genre I love the most.

As an aspiring game developer, this research was very helpful in giving me an idea of what aesthetic elements to or not to include in game for the game to be considered in the genre I want the story to be expressed using. The story is about a poor young Italian man who joined to work as a middle-man for the Mafia, later got betrayed, shot in the head, survived the attack but ends up partially delusional due to brain damage. want lot mot than this. So, I am sort of in a decision to make a neo-noir themed game with action, slow-motion stunts accompanied with tango music, the game will be called "El Tango Macabre".

The story is about a poor young Italian man who joined to work as a middle-man for the Mafi, later got betrayed, shot in the head, survived the attack but ends up partially delusional due to brain damage. So, to properly theme the game, I should have a good understanding about genres, and guess what I was able to learn a lot during this research.
